Tip of the Week: Fish Your Flies in Their Natural Setting

Here at Red’s we love this fly pattern the “Jiggy Fry.” I like it because you can fish it in a variety of ways… swing it like a streamer, tightline nymph it or dead drift under an indicator. The tip here is to understand what type of fly you are fishing and fish it accordingly.

This particular pattern is imitating a small fry. Fry do not move the same way a nymph will and will not inhabit the same water much of the time. This pattern is probably best fished on the swing because it best imitates a fry swimming through the water column. Knowing this, I want to focus on the type of water I would swing through when I’m using a different style like indicator nymphing. Once I started targeting this type of water, I started to find more and better fish.  Now if I was fishing a small Zebra Midge, I would focus on those deeper slower trenches.  The key is to think about where flies live and hatch and fish there.

Full Disclosure: This fly was on fire this day. I caught fish with this fly in almost every water type. HOWEVER, I caught the largest and most fish in the water that was moving at a slow jogging speed next to fast water.

SUMMARY:

When you are choosing a certain type of fly to use, think about where this fly lives and hatches and fish it in that type of water.

We teach the above technique and many more in our Fishalong Courses.  Come join us in one of these to squash that learning curve.  This is just one of the hundred skills that you could gain by joining our University of Fly Fishing.
