Up and down the river goes. Typical Spring. We have cycled through two salmon pulses now and wow does this river fish well on the drop. The Yakima continues to evolve into an epic river. This past week, we have seen the best Salmon Fly Hatch and the most abundant March Brown hatch some of us have ever seen. If the Yakima went in for a health check up to the river doctor, the results would be stellar! We will all need to do our part this coming summer to manage a low snowpack and warmer water. Let's take care of this amazing resource!
Many flies on the water. No matter which hatch you are targeting. When you see the feeding fish, create a game plan for success. We help you out on this topic with this week's TIP OF THE WEEK.
This salmon fly hatch has me feeling like I'm back in Patagonia slapping hoppers down for big browns. Pretty sweet to fish a size 6 bug with 2x tippet. We are finding these fish in water with jogging speed and a little chop. If you fished the Skwala hatch, you will take notice that the Salmon fly water is a little faster.
March Browns and BWOs continue to be solid on cloudy days. If you see rising fish, make sure you study how they are eating. If you are not seeing their heads come out of the water and are only seeing a splash, the fish are taking emergers. You will have much better action fishing a soft hackle right below the surface.
Caddis are here and will just get thicker as April rolls into May. Get ready for those 5-9pm floats. Awww yeah!
Watch the flows using the links below in the footer of the report, scrooooollll down. Lots of quick links there to help plan your trip. It's a super time to rent a fishing raft, wade fish the Canyon, or of course... book a guide!
